The Gaden Shartse Gelugpa Monastery is located in southern India in the region of Karnataka, where it was rebuilt as a replica of the destroyed Shartse Gaden Monastery in Tibet.
It shelters a community of approximately 1,500 monks, aged from 4 to even 100 years, many of them orphans, whom the monastery provides lodging, maintenance and teachings in a complimentary way.
In the Monastery all the attended studies enable the monks to reach the degree of Geshe Lharampa (the highest academic honour certified in the of Gelugpa education system, equivalent to the degree of Doctor in Buddhist Philosophy according to the Indian University).
The monks try to procure their own crops, whose seeds were donated at the time by the Government of India, but periods of heavy rainfall annually devastate their crops, and thus they depend mainly on received donations.
Sanitary conditions are very poor, there are problems with housing, toilets, electricity, water, etc. They only receive one annual medical visit (for all residents of the monastery) which are frequent causes for diseases such as tuberculosis, diabetes, heart problems, blindness, etc. another reason for many diseases and poor health is the Indian climate, very different from the Tibetan.
Since most of the monks are Tibetan exiles, the harsh conditions of travelling to India means that many of them arrive in pitiful conditions, they even lose limbs or suffer paralysis by frostbite, or experience various ailments during the trip (diarrhoeas, fever…)
For all these reasons, the Monastery is very grateful for the aid received from the people who collaborate in helping through sponsorship of the monks.

The money received by the sponsorship covers the needs of the monk and the rest is for the improvement of the community, creating a link due to written correspondence between the monk and the people who sponsored him, who can follow closely his personal and monastic evolution.
The amount of donations for sponsorships is quite elastic, as the monastery welcomes even the minimum aid, as reference we can indicate that the average is 55 cents a day (which is about € 200 per year), due to the high cost of sending a bank transfer, the bank transfers are usually done every six months or annually.
If you wish to sponsor a monk or already have one sponsored and wish to make the registry in the foundation, please fill out the following form :
